Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge

Travel Information

Arriving by Road

Click here to see the Cambridge Area Road Map. This map will show you the route from the Railway Station and the Bus Station to Fitzwilliam College. It looks as if it is in one straight line but only if you are walking - there is a one-way system in operation in the centre of Cambridge as well as a pedestrian precinct 10.00am. - 4.00pm.

Fitzwilliam College is located on the Huntingdon Road (A1307) and is approximately 1 mile north west of Cambridge city centre.  Click here for an Adobe Acrobat .pdf of the local access roads, college car parks and main entrance.

From the North:
Access by road from the North is via the A1 to Huntingdon, then A14 and A1307 (Huntingdon Road) into Cambridge. Fitzwilliam is approximately 2 miles along Huntingdon Road on your right hand side.

From the East:
Using the A14 take the B1049 exit towards Cambridge. At the end of Histon Road turn right and right again at the traffic lights into Huntingdon Road. Fitzwilliam is approximately 200 metres on your left.

From the South:
Use Junction 13 of the M11 to come east into Cambridge along the A1303 (Madingley Road). Go through one set of lights and immediately before the next set of lights turn left into Storey's Way passing Churchill College on your left. The road curves left and Fitzwilliam College is immediately on your right after the bend.

From the West:
Join either the M11 or A14 and follow directions as detailed above.

Car Parking:
Please note that Fitzwilliam College has two car parks, one on Huntingdon Road and the other on Storey's Way. Please contact Tricia Ellis-Evans if you wish to park in the College car parks.

Street car parking is available along Storeys Way by the College entrance.

Arriving by Train

Cambridge Railway Station is outside the city centre so you will need to take a taxi to the College or 'City Rail Link' bus to the city centre and then a local bus from the Drummer Street/Emmanuel Street Bus Station either Citi 5 destination Bar Hill or Citi 6 destination Oakington.  Fitzwilliam College is situated just over a mile away on the Huntingdon Road.  There is a stop directly outside the College.

Information on UK train timetables can be obtained from here

Arriving by Bus

The National Express, Stagecoach and regional buses all stop at the Drummer Street/Emmanuel Street Bus Station in the City Centre. You can then either take a taxi or a local bus to Huntingdon Road (see above).  You can visit the National Express website or telephone 08705 80 80 80.

Arriving by Air

The nearest airport is London Stansted.  Information on all major UK airports, including Stansted, Heathrow and Gatwick can be obtained from the British Airport Authority web site.

Airport Bus Services
National Express operate regular daily services between Cambridge and most airports. See their website for full details. You should note that approximate travelling times from Stansted are up to 1 hour; from Heathrow up to 2.5 hours; and from Gatwick at least 4 hours.  It is important to visit the National Express web site and plan your journey as the buses are affected by rushhour and it can take you longer than the times mentioned above. On arrival in Cambridge the taxi stand is immediately across the road from the bay used by the airport bus in Drummer Street Station or take the local bus to Huntingdon Road (before 1830) - Citi 5 destination Bar Hill or Citi 6 destination Oakington.  Fitzwilliam College is situated just over a mile away on the Huntingdon Road.  There is a stop directly outside the College.

Airport Train Services
Heathrow is the only airport directly linked to central London by the Underground (Piccadilly Line).  It takes approximately 1 hour to Kings Cross Railway Station.  If you link with a fast Cambridge train the journey time form Heathrow to Cambridge can be as little as 2 hours.

Also from Heathrow - the Heathrow Express (operating every 15 minutes) will take you to Paddington Station in 15 minutes.  You can buy your ticket in 3 different ways: 1) Online - £14.50 single and £28 return; 2) Ticket machine/office - £15.50 single and £29 return; 3) Purchased onboard the train - £17.50 single and £31 return.  From Paddington you can take the Circle or Hammersmith & City Underground lines to King's Cross or Liverpool Street Stations.  King's Cross has the more reliable service to Cambridge.  Depending on which train you link with, you could be in Cambridge in just 2 hours.
NB: These prices may change in January 2008.

From Gatwick  - there is the Gatwick Express (operating every 15 minutes) which will take you to Victoria Station in 30 minutes at a cost of £26.80 return or £15.90 single.  From Victoria Station you take the Victoria Underground Line to King's Cross or the Circle Line to Liverpool Street Station.  However, there is an alternative service between Gatwick and King's Cross operated by Thameslink.  This runs every 30 minutes and takes 45 minutes to reach King's Cross.  It terminates at King's Cross Thameslink Station which is a short walk through to King's Cross mainline station.  Therefore, with this train it is not necessary to use the Underground which can be very busy, depending on the time of day.  On balance, Gatwick to Cambridge is approximately 30 minutes faster using Thameslink.
NB: These prices may change in January 2008.

From Stansted  - there are two trains an hour to Cambridge.  The Cross Country service is a direct service and takes approximately 30 minutes whereas the One Railway service involves a change of trains at Bishops Stortford and takes just under one hour.

Use the National Rail travel planner to check details of any of the above trains.
